UK plug-in solar becomes legal from 27 August 2026 — but not for batteries

After years sitting in a genuine regulatory grey area, plug-in solar has a confirmed legal route onto the UK market. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) made the necessary regulations on 16 July 2026, and they come into force on 27 August 2026. It's a real milestone for renters, flat-dwellers and anyone who's wanted a foothold in solar without a full rooftop install.

But the headline hides an important detail — one that matters a lot if you're actually comparing kits with a battery built in, which is most of what gets sold under the "plug-in solar" banner in the UK today.

What's actually changing

Until now, a solar kit with a standard UK plug designed to feed power into your home sat awkwardly against existing product safety law. The Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations lean on BS 7671, the UK wiring standard, which was written for fixed installations and never really anticipated a consumer plugging a generator into a wall socket.

DESNZ ran a short public consultation from 16 to 30 June 2026, proposing to amend the Plugs and Sockets etc. (Safety) Regulations 1994 and introduce a new Interim Product Specification — a set of minimum technical and safety standards modelled on Germany's well-established approach, adapted for UK wiring practice and building stock. The consultation drew 466 responses, and more than 85% backed the proposed specification. The regulations were made on 16 July, laid before Parliament the following day, and take effect five weeks later.

Why this is the part that actually matters

If you're comparing kits like the ones on this site, sit with that last point for a second. The new simplified legal route is for panels-only devices with no storage attached. Practically, that means two things. First, battery-inclusive kits haven't become "more legal" than they were last week — they were already on sale and in use via the existing route (a G98 notification, generally with a qualified electrician given the higher capacities involved), and nothing here changes that. Second, several of the kits we compare take considerably more solar than the new 800W cap allows anyway — the STREAM Ultra alone accepts up to 2,000W of panel input — so even once compliant solar-only kits reach shelves, they'll be a different product for a different job, not a cut-price version of the same thing.

Nothing's actually on shelves yet

As of 24 July 2026, no product had been confirmed as compliant with the final specification, and none of the retailers DESNZ named back in March — Lidl, Amazon and Iceland — had confirmed an on-sale date. Trade coverage has also pointed to a government safety study of six kits carried out in June 2026: all six reportedly performed safely, but all six also reportedly exceeded the Class B electromagnetic interference limit — a gap that will need closing before compliant stock actually reaches shelves. The realistic expectation is compliant kits arriving through autumn 2026, not appearing overnight on 27 August itself.

Two things worth knowing if you're weighing this up

Already have rooftop solar? The simple-connect threshold most homes use (3.68kW) is cumulative per property. Adding an 800W plug-in unit on top of existing rooftop solar could push your total over that limit and tip you into the more involved G99 application process instead of a quick notification.

Thinking about VAT timing? Solar equipment currently carries 0% VAT. Some industry coverage notes this is due to revert to the standard 5% reduced rate in March 2027 — so if solar-only kits do reach shelves later this year, there's a real but time-limited window before that changes. Worth checking current HMRC guidance nearer the time rather than relying on any single article, including this one.

If your only goal is the simplest, lowest-commitment way to generate a bit of your own power, it's worth waiting for a confirmed-compliant solar-only kit once they land. Early industry estimates for an 800W panel-only setup with no battery put realistic savings somewhere around £40–£85 a year — without storage you only capture whatever you use in daylight hours, typically a quarter to two-fifths of what you generate.
